Archibald’s Packing Guide for the Dry Tortugas (From a Sensible Gopher Tortoise)

Pack smart for the Dry Tortugas: bring shade, plenty of water, familiar snacks, and patience for the wobbly journey. A little preparation—and curiosity—goes a long way for a landlocked traveler.

If you are planning a journey to the Dry Tortugas—first, congratulations. You are either very adventurous or very poorly informed. Either way, you’ll want to pack wisely.

1. Shade (Non-Negotiable)
There are limited places to escape the sun, and while I personally bring my shell everywhere, you may need a hat, umbrella, or some other portable shade. The sun out there is… enthusiastic.

2. Fresh Water
Do not rely on finding it. The place is called Dry Tortugas for a reason. Bring more water than you think you need, then add a little more. Trust me.

3. Snacks from Home
If you enjoy a specific type of plant or leafy green, bring it along. Island dining options are limited unless you’ve developed a taste for whatever happens to be growing stubbornly in sand.

4. Comfortable Footing
The sand is soft and pleasant, but not ideal for digging. Adjust your expectations accordingly. You won’t be establishing a proper burrow here—this is a temporary visit, not a relocation.

5. Patience for Travel
Boats are wobbly. The ocean moves in ways that feel unnecessary. Bring a calm mindset and perhaps something to steady yourself. (I recommend quiet acceptance.)

6. Curiosity
This may be the most important item. You’ll encounter things you’ve never seen—endless water, unusual birds, and turtles who seem to have mastered floating. It helps to stay open-minded.

Final Thought
Pack light, but pack thoughtfully. You won’t need much—just enough to stay comfortable while you experience something extraordinary. And remember: it’s perfectly acceptable to be a little overwhelmed. I certainly was.
